BROOM Leys Primary School in Coalville marked the 100th birthday of Leicester-born Sir David Attenborough by hosting a special nature themed day.

Pupils and staff, focused on wildlife, conservation and caring for the environment.

Throughout the day, they took part in a wide range of outdoor learning activities designed to encourage curiosity about the natural world.

Activities included bug hunts, pond dipping, creating habitats for frogs and newts and making bird feeders for the school’s wellbeing garden.

Older pupils also took part in outdoor literacy sessions inspired by nature.

A key focus of the day was improving wildlife areas across the school site.

The school’s Eco Warriors and School Council members led planting activities, helping to develop the wellbeing garden and orchard.

Pupils planted fruit, vegetables and sunflowers and began work on a new wildflower meadow, which has been named the ‘Attenborough Meadow’ in recognition of Sir David’s lifelong commitment to the natural world.

The day concluded with a whole school assembly where pupils sang ‘A Song for our Planet,’ reinforcing messages around environmental responsibility and collective action.

Head of School Hayley Barnard said: “Sir David Attenborough has inspired generations to care about the natural world and it was important for us to mark his 100th birthday in a meaningful way.

“The day allowed our pupils to learn about nature through hands on experiences while making a positive difference to their school environment.”
