POLICE in Coalville seized an e-bike capable of speeds of more than 30mph.

Ashby Beat Team stopped the rider last weekend and found the bike did not meet legal requirements.

A message issued via the Neighbourhood Link site, said: “Last night (April 3), Officers 6443 and 6633 from the Ashby Beat Team stopped a male riding an e‑bike in the Coalville area.

“Although the bike had pedals, it was also fitted with a throttle and was capable of reaching speeds of 50 km/h (around 31 mph) when lifted off the ground.

“This means it does not meet the legal requirements of an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) and is classed as a motor vehicle.

Because of this, the rider would legally require:

• A valid driving licence

• Insurance

• Registration

• A suitable helmet

• Tax (where applicable)

“The rider did not have these, so the bike was seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.”

North West Leicestershire Police added: “Illegal or modified e‑bikes pose serious risks to both the rider and the public.

“Officers will continue to take action where bikes do not meet legal standards or are being ridden dangerously or antisocially.”
