NORTH West Leicestershire Police have issued a thank-you after the organisation for last Sunday’s Ashby 20 race ran as planned.

The annual race attracted around 1,500 runners for the popular event, which extends to a large area around Ashby.

But police made it known this week that the event passed off without any added concerns.

The police said: “With road closures stretching throughout Ashby — including Swepstone, Heather, Normanton and Packington — we know the event caused delays, detours and the occasional last‑minute route change.

“With 19 of the 20 miles affected by closures, your cooperation really helped us keep everything running smoothly and safely.”

Local police also highlighted one of their own who ran in the event, organised by Ivanhoe Runners.

The police added: “We’re also proud to say that one of our very own took part in the challenge — Sgt Bell, who swapped his uniform for running gear and was off like a siren!

“He kept a steady pace, didn’t exceed any “speed limits,” and we can confirm there were no reports of him resisting a rest at the finish line.

“And although he normally catches offenders, this time he was just catching his breath.

"A huge thank you once again to residents, runners, volunteers and marshals for helping us keep the event safe, supported and ‘by the book’.

“Your patience kept things lawful, and your smiles kept things cheerful.”
